Currency — not picking between won and dollar, and no FX hedging
- Decision
- Keep the current setup with no currency hedging. Korean won covers living costs and an emergency fund; dollars are simply what came with buying overseas assets. New money goes toward the target weights for gold and essential-service stocks rather than into a currency bet.
- Why
- I worry that ongoing monetary expansion will erode the purchasing power of cash over time, whichever currency it's in. So I chose to keep money out of cash rather than pick a currency.
- Expected outcome
- Even if the won–dollar rate rises or falls beyond my preset threshold for a 'large' move within three months of the decision (September 30), I'll stick to this rule.
- Options not taken
- Buy currency-hedged products when the won is strong.
- Revisit whenever the exchange rate leaves a preset band.
- Since the decision
- won/dollar rate -1.6% (Oct 31)
the won strengthened against the dollar — an interim picture; whether it was right is judged on the review date
